The basics

What Is Volumetric Weight?

Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight or DIM weight) is a theoretical weight calculated from a package’s dimensions rather than its mass. It expresses how much space a shipment takes up on a truck, in a plane or in a warehouse.

Carriers use it because a light but bulky package occupies the same load capacity as a heavy, compact one. By comparing actual weight and volumetric weight, a transport service can apply the greater of the two: the chargeable weight, also known as billable weight.

The calculation

How to Calculate Volumetric Weight

Multiply the package’s length, width and height, then divide the result by the volumetric divisor. With dimensions in centimetres the divisor is expressed in cm³/kg and the result is in kilograms.

Volumetric Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ Divisor

Example

  1. A 60 × 40 × 30 cm package, actual weight 5 kg, divisor 5000.
  2. 60 × 40 × 30 = 72,000 cm³; 72,000 ÷ 5000 = 14.40 kg of volumetric weight.
  3. The estimated billable weight is the greater of 5 kg and 14.40 kg, that is 14.40 kg.

If you use inches and pounds, the calculator converts everything to centimetres and kilograms before applying the formula (1 in = 2.54 cm; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg).

Side by side

Actual Weight vs. Volumetric Weight

Actual weight

The real mass of the package, measured on a scale, packaging included. It does not depend on size.

Volumetric weight

A theoretical weight that depends only on the package’s outer dimensions and the divisor. It does not depend on what is inside.

Billable weight

The greater of the two. For shipments with several packages, the comparison is made package by package and then added up.

Divisors

Why Do Volumetric Divisors Vary?

There is no single divisor. Different services (express, air, road groupage, local couriers) may use different divisors, because the capacity to be filled and the cost of space are not the same. The value can also depend on the commercial agreement.

Common values are 4000, 5000 and 6000 cm³/kg, but they are not universal rules: that is why the calculator lets you choose a custom divisor and does not tie it to any carrier. Always check the divisor stated in your service’s terms.

Packaging

How to Reduce Volumetric Shipping Costs

No tip guarantees a saving: it depends on rates and service conditions. These good practices do help you avoid paying for unused space.

  • Choose right-sized boxes: empty space counts as volume.
  • Cut unnecessary filling material, without compromising protection.
  • Use mailers or bags for soft or compressible products, where suitable.
  • Pack several items into one well-sized package, if it works for the weight.
  • Compare several box sizes with this calculator before standardising them.
  • Check your carrier’s measuring rules, such as how dimensions are rounded.
Frequently asked questions

Volumetric weight: the answers.

What is volumetric weight?

It is a theoretical weight calculated from a package’s dimensions (length × width × height) divided by a divisor. It measures the space a shipment takes up, not its mass.

How do you calculate dimensional weight?

Multiply the package’s three dimensions and divide by the volumetric divisor. With dimensions in cm and a divisor of 5000 cm³/kg, a 60 × 40 × 30 cm package has a volumetric weight of 14.40 kg.

What is the difference between actual and volumetric weight?

Actual weight is the real mass measured on a scale. Volumetric weight depends only on outer dimensions. A light but bulky package can have a volumetric weight far above its actual weight.

What is a volumetric divisor?

It is the number the package volume (in cm³) is divided by to get volumetric weight in kg. A lower divisor gives a higher volumetric weight, and vice versa.

Can I use a custom volumetric divisor?

Yes. Besides 4000, 5000 and 6000 you can enter any positive value, such as 4500 or 5500, in cm³/kg. The divisor applies to all packages in the calculation and is included in the divisor comparison.

How is billable weight calculated?

For each package, take the greater of actual and volumetric weight and multiply it by the quantity; then add up the packages. It is an estimate with no carrier rounding, because some services apply different rules.

How can I reduce volumetric shipping costs?

By cutting unused space: right-sized boxes, less filling material, suitable packaging for soft products. The real saving depends on rates and service conditions, which this tool does not know.

Does every carrier use the same volumetric factor?

No. The divisor can vary by service, mode of transport and contract. That is why the calculator does not tie it to any carrier: always check the value stated in your service’s terms.
